German submarine U-505 was a Type IXC U-boat that had a very interesting (and in many ways, tragic) history. The Type IXC boats were bigger, long-range boats with heavier construction and better armament (although they were not as nimble as the smaller Type VII).
U-505 underwent several refits over its career, and had three (3) different commanders. The boat was captured in June 1944 by United States Navy Task Group 22.3, and then in 1954 it was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois where to this day it remains as one of the museum's most popular exhibits.
My plan is to "turn back the clock" on U-505, building the boat as it appeared at the end of a major refit (late June 1943) while under the command of Kptlt. Peter Zschech.
This will involve changes to the keel, tower configuration, and the boat's armament.
And of course I may add a wee bit of detailing along the way...
